Through Our Eyes – The Outlaws’ Perspective on the Psychedelics Trade. Meet the outlaws and mavericks who defied convention to make LSD available to the masses. They’re the people behind the stories that are told in the new documentary by Seth Ferranti.
“The Secret History of the LSD Trade,” is a film in process that discusses the outlaws who took the risk of “conspiracy to manufacture LSD,” or to distribute illegal psychedelics and cannabis, and were arrested and usually imprisoned. Many of these “busts” went down in the parking lot, or Shakedown Street, before, during, and after a Grateful Dead show, by narcs, dressed up in tiedyes, mimicking Deadheads.
The methodology of the film is a combination of stock footage and live interviews that tell the story of LSD from its early use through the War on Drugs, and the change in the political climate simultaneous with the growth in the Deadhead culture. It wasn’t unusual to hear, “I’m on tour,” as an occupation from a Deadhead following the band across the country. The original thrust of psychedelics as a tool to higher consciousness, oneness, and creation, was sometimes lost in the fun of tripping.
The director, Seth Ferranti, suffered multiple arrests, and was even on the lam. Another individual, Tim Tyler, was arrested three times, during a time when the “3 strikes and you’re out, law” meant imprisonment for life, after three apprehensions. A third, Leonard Pickard, ran an underground LSD lab at the same time he was a student in the John F. Kennedy Harvard School of Government. He had the foresight to predict the Fentanyl crisis, but by then, he was an “outlaw” and few listened.
Psychedelic Revolution: The Secret History of the LSD Trade is a trilogy series that looks at how psychedelics went from having medicinal, therapeutical, and spiritual value throughout the 1950s and 60s, to being demonized and targeted during the War on Drugs era, as the trade went underground for 50 years. Only to reemerge, as the counter culture becomes mainstream, following cannabis’ path in the legitimate pharmaceutical world. Former LSD and Cannabis POW and writer/director Seth Ferranti, who wrote and produced the Netflix hit doc WHITE BOY, brings this tale, from the outlaw POV, to life in this amazing, engaging, and intriguing new docu-series.
