From San Francisco’s Streets to Museum Collections: Thirty Years of Art, Obsession, and Underground Culture

GRASS VALLEY, CA

For more than three decades, the elusive San Francisco artist Zoltron has cultivated a fiercely devoted community of collectors, with limited-edition releases selling out in seconds and rare works becoming increasingly difficult to find. This Halloween, dozens of those long-unavailable artworks will emerge from the archives for an ambitious retrospective at The Chambers Project in Grass Valley, California.

Opening October 31, 2026, Zoltron: An Anthology of Arcane Artifacts brings together approximately 50 rare, hand-printed concert posters, original artwork, street relics, and experimental editions alongside new sculptures, collaborations, and large-scale installations.

Among them: a twelve-foot skeletal girl, a functioning vintage telephone booth transmitting cryptic messages, and monumental portraits assembled from tens of thousands of individually torn pieces of unsaturated LSD blotter art. The exhibition also features cast bronze and aluminum sculptures, including a 160-pound astronaut that originated as a Foo Fighters concert poster, alongside a wall of life-sized fiberglass masks individually reimagined by invited artists from the underground art community.

“Thirty years of making art, breaking rules, collaborating with amazing artists, and encouraging misconduct among an ever-growing cast of collectors, collaborators, friends, and accomplices. The Chambers Project has always understood the importance of community, so it feels like the right place to celebrate three decades of creative misbehavior. I owe everyone involved a tremendous amount of gratitude, and probably an apology.”

Emerging from San Francisco’s street-art scene in the 1990s, Zoltron developed a distinctive visual world through wheat-pasted imagery, independent printmaking, and original concert posters created in collaboration with musicians including Primus, Iggy Pop, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Ween, Blondie, and Soundgarden. His work is represented in institutional collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, de Young Museum, SFMOMA, LACMA, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The exhibition opens with a Halloween celebration featuring live music, elaborate costumes, a costume contest, food, drinks, and interactive installations. The limited VIP Collector Experience sold out shortly after tickets were released, with general admission tickets now available.

Artist Bio

ZOLTRON

Zoltron is a San Francisco–based artist whose work spans more than three decades of street art, printmaking, sculpture, installation, and collaborative projects. Emerging from the city’s underground art and music communities in the 1990s, his early work included wheat-pasted imagery, stencils, stickers, and interventions in public spaces. Those origins continue to inform a practice built around unconventional materials, limited editions, and an evolving cast of recurring characters.

His original, hand-printed concert posters have accompanied performances by Primus, Iggy Pop, Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, Ween, Blondie, Soundgarden, and Queens of the Stone Age. His longstanding relationship with Primus included serving as the band’s creative director. In 2002, he co-founded Sticker Robot, an independent printing company that has since produced hundreds of millions of stickers for artists and creative communities worldwide.

In recent years, Zoltron has expanded his practice into cast bronze and aluminum sculpture, large-scale installations, and collaborative works. His recurring character Sue Nami, a skeletal spirit girl who appears throughout his work, connects these different mediums through an evolving visual mythology.

His artwork is represented in institutional collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, de Young Museum, SFMOMA, LACMA, MoMA’s Department of Film, Museum of Pop Culture, and Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame holds 50 of his concert posters in its collection.
