Jacaeber Kastor

Jacaeber Kastor

In turns perplexing, disorienting, wondrous and utterly beguiling, Jacaeber Kastor’s drawings make you look, look again and then still more, trying to find your way in their miasmic magic until at last, well, you discover the special pleasure of being truly lost. And when you think you’re done, when you’ve decoded the esoteric and abstract, conjured all the forms and meanings from these oceans of latency, answered the call of otherness as if it were the sphinx’s riddle- turn the work or flip your head, around and around, because there is no single perspective to read Kastor’s psychedelic topography: it is an entwined and constantly unfolding omniverse that has no right side up or upside down.

If, in the course of your wanderings through Kastor’s meandering poetics of line and space, you come across the unexpected, the oddly familiar or the impossibly alien- for indeed you surely will, quite possible all at once with overwhelming simultaneity- and you ask yourself how did you even come to get here, you might also ask how indeed did this artist arrive at just such a place himself. Make no mistake about it, Jacaeber Kastor is an intrepid voyager of body and mind, an adventurer without destination or designation, a man without return for even when he has somehow been there before he understands it as different, everything nuanced with the subtle shifts of imperceptible change, actuality always just beyond the tiny grasp of appearance, reason or replication. His art, like the convolutions of a restless mind guiding the inspired hand of uncertainty, is the tracings of a mind-traveler, a map to the nowhere that is everywhere, something so personally idiosyncratic that it marks a shared commons where likeness meets in a zone of compatible dissimilarity.

Growing up in Berkeley in the Sixties, son of an artist and art teacher from the abstract expressionist tradition whose legacy we might consider in Kastor’s penchant for the dissolving figuration into swirling abstractions, Kastor’s emerging vision further benefitted from a formative exposure to the ideas and sensibilities of the counterculture and drug culture around him. Add to this some years as a competitive skier in Squaw Valley, various physical labor jobs on both coasts including construction, house painting, plumbing and working in a ship yard, a stint studying at the venerable San Francisco Art Institute and a number of years practicing Buddhism and meditation at a Zen center, and you have the fecund ground for the flower garden of this artist’s fertile growth. All this life experience however is almost secondary to the informal but deep artistic training Kastor got when he decided that if he was going to have to support his art with a day job- a certainty because he realized early that his work was too slow and laborious as well as not so commercially minded to make a living at- he would do so by opening a gallery.

Born in 1986 and still residing in California, I am a self taught artist. I was encouraged from a young age to draw and create, and I never stopped.

My work reaches towards a theory of chromatic vibration through the discord of contrasting images. These images are linked together through an optic pattern, or a warped tessellation,  to bring forth a harmonious outcome. Multidimensional patterns are interlaced with psychedelic landscapes and strange, abstract forms.  The melding together of these images suggests a metaphysical cosmology through a dance of contrasting phenomena. Inter-playing images make a perceptual abstraction, creating an extra-dimensionality in the work. A subtle landscape becomes a bursting, radiant field of optic vibration. This triad of imagery grasps at form and formlessness, like the ineffable and temporal experience of an ecstatic state.

I am inspired by the atomic soup of the natural universe, particularly the Earth’s bio computer that we are privileged to be occupying. I’m under the influence of a bewilderment that is conjured up by the purest art forms found in nature as patterns, bifurcating ratios of plant growth, or clouds creating light swirling sunset skies. The realization of the micro and macro existing simultaneously. I hope to stimulate and inspire by creating a node of beauty among the aesthetic of nature.

LEIGHTON KELLY

Leighton Kelly was born 336 (dog) years ago and grew up in a small hamlet in the mountains of the verdant valley of Saint Cross, California. Because of a centralized vampire infestation plaguing the area he became fascinated with drawing monsters and other creatures of the night.  In time he branched out into drawing spaceships and aliens after a brief encounter with the Grays (unprobed) and later when it was age appropriate, he drew Sports Illustrated and Macy’s bra models (probed).

When he finally managed to escape from the state-mandated child prison, he moonlit as a student at the local community college. There he learned that if you wanted only to take art classes and skip everything else on a G.E.D. you just have to stop caring about what people think. This is where he also discovered that if you have a passion for art then no medium of creativity should be safe from idle hands. Contemporaneously, the unified theory of “Zero Fucks Given” began to take root. however, there were many fucks left to give at this early stage and the road to giving them all away was a long and harrowing one.

Ironically, the art of zero fucks must include the collecting of so many fucks that one becomes so tired of fucks that the natural and innate desire to discard every fuck possible blossoms without resistance. To discover this, Leighton traveled realms far and wide learning many of life’s most profound and difficult lessons. Traversing over 36 countries, starting and ending multiple careers, selling vaudeville snake oil to rubes and enjoying a brief stardom in television as the erstwhile Brick Rockson of the Two Renegade Cops fame (syndicated only in Peru and  Uruguay and banned in the States), these journeys gave him the most important aspect of living a fuck-free life: embracing the freedom to fail (learned by mistake).

Distilling down a lifetime of peculiar experiences culminated in the terrifying realization that everything he knew to be true was a blatant and obscene lie. Life, it seems, is a juxtaposition between mental slavery and abject freedom tempered only by the capacity to weigh and measure the value of fucks given. Are we not sparks of the Divine housed in corporeal form for a brief time while traveling blindly in a mysterious mirror-world simulation? Can you really be sure that you even exist? Are you certain this reality isn’t a fever dream that you’re just about to wake up from? Did you write this? Has some fractal aspect of your true infinite nature hidden these clues for this exact moment in order to remind you that your irrational belief in fucks is the reason you’ve gotten yourself into this insufferable predicament to begin with? I don’t know but it sounded like a good idea at the time.

Sincerely,
Lay

MARS-1

Mario Martinez (aka MARS-1) paints from a penetrating perspective of great depth. Viewers are drawn into his imaginative compositions, overflowing with colorful geometric and organic shapes, layered to form unique patterns and textures.

The artist’s signature style of vast, abstracted, quasi-extraterrestrial looking landscapes feature imagery of surreal distortions, contained within spherically convex transparent bubbles. Skillfully combining optical color blending with perspective line work, his painting techniques result in very three-dimensional forms, which echo the anatomy of architecture, and microcosmic structures of biology.

Themes explored range from very scientific to more esoteric phenomena. From theoretical physics, metamorphosis and collective consciousness, to ufology and examining possibilities of otherworldly principles, the relative link between physical and life sciences are applied throughout. Transitional energies, natural multiplicity, helixes and spontaneous biological occurrences all come together, forming imagery with hypotheses beyond the scope of modern technology.

Oliver Vernon

Visually, Oliver Vernon’s paintings draw upon an incredibly varied pool of influences, from abstract expressionism, to post pop surrealism and the polished finish of figurative realism. Formally, his work is about the deconstruction, and hence the necessary reconstruction of visual space. From this central dichotomy stems many others: logic/illogic, physical/metaphysical, imprisonment/liberation. His paintings come to us, perhaps, as detailed snapshots of the few primordial milliseconds when the blueprint of the universe was being sculpted from the final throes of chaos. In this sense, anything goes. Each painting has its own set of rules, or rather the rules are being bent, broken and ultimately formed within each painting. Color, form, energy, architecture, good, evil, flesh and machine are lurking, never as physical entities, but as transient archetypes searching out their final places within the framework of the cosmos. Apart from this macro view, Oliver’s work can be seen at the micro level as well. We can view his paintings as representations of how the mind is formed from a foundation of thought, reason, and aesthetics, and how these entities are simultaneously at odds and interconnected.

Oliver Vernon was born in New York in 1972. He received his BFA from Parsons School of Design in 1995, and currently lives and works in Northern California. He has exhibited his work in cities all across the United States including New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Washington DC, Denver and Chicago, and has also shown in the UK, Italy, France, and Canada. His work is part of numerous collections, including the Microsoft Corporation and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
